Artificial filmy

I am not a person who likes photoshop, so usually my pictures are not heavily processed (of course i would remove pimples and dust marks :P ). This time, i photoshop-ed the pictures, as I want them to be filmy.

I was using a range-finder on a film camera, but the film was found to be broken when I finished the whole roll. To make myself feel better, I just made these digital photos filmy. Hope you will like them.

Hope

A few days ago, I finally made myself work on the pictures I took in Taiwan in May. Sorry about being lazy ;)

When we were in JiuFen, we met this adorable dog. Actually he was a stray dog, but Taiwanese are so nice that they fed the dog and even washed him. He was so friendly to strangers, and look at his eyes - he really lived in hope!

Silhouette

Silhouette, my favorite kind of photographic technique. Silhouette removes some details which are not essential to express the beauty of shapes, and is very easy to take.

There is only one rule in taking silhouette shots  - metering. You need to make sure that your are metering at the background, which should be either a source of light or at least with more light than the subject.

How to implement this? 2 simple steps
(1) set metering mode to spot metering mode
(2) meter at the specified AF spot (default AF spot would be the center one), and the AF spot should be put at the light background.
By doing so, metering would be done according to the background and ignore the rest of the picture. Thus, the background is sharp and the subject is very dark, and the silhouette shot is done!

Peach Blossom Romance

This year, the 1st day of Chinese lunar year is on 14th Feb. It is so romantic to see peach blossoms everywhere, especially on valentines' day. I was celebrating valentines' day with my boyfriend on 10th Feb so we can beat the rush of valentines. After lunch, we went to Time square (Hong Kong) and took some pictures.

When we take pictures of flowers, we must consider where the light comes from, and the source of the light. In this picture, I used the light in the shopping mall (i.e. artificial) to form the out-focused light circles. The background should be warm enough to create the romantic atmosphere, but it must be soft.

In contrast to the upper one, this picture demonstrates how to use "low light" effect to take peach blossom pictures. I would like to express the sadness in romance, therefore i used "low light" effect to depict the shadow of romance.

As you might notice, these two pictures were taken at the same place, with same amount of light and the same flowers. The only difference is the exposure length. Upper one: F4(aperture), 1/80 seconds; Lower one: F4(aperture), 1/400 seconds

F4 is pretty necessary when you take pictures of flowers. With larger aperture (the number is smaller, such as F4 and F2.8), you can create background blur, so the subject would not be distracted by the background.

By using different exposure lengths, you can form different emotions in the picture. Enjoy!

The beginning...

Obviously, I dont know how i should start this...

After using flickr, facebook and xanga to write something and post something, i just feel like i need a better place to put my pictures and my thoughts together.

Hope you will enjoy it :)
